The hamstrings are big powerful muscles……and they get tight!  The hamstrings cross the knee joint so its bests to stretch them two ways (with the knee bent and the knee extended).  This way you stretch the belly of the muscle in the back of the leg (knee bent), and the tendinous portion behind the knee (knee straight).
